Hey Rev – a surprise and a great answer.

I’ll probably have to have a few goes at my assignment, Mr Polanski. My first answer would be Great Expectations. Firstly, it’s hella long, so you’d get a good many hours’ worth of reading out of it. Secondly, I hope that you would find yourself filling to the brim with ideas about some human qualities – resilience, love, self-reliance, loyalty and forgiveness. And also it’s got some scary bits.

Great question Joey. And I’m going to stick completely to the rules AND surprise everyone: my single choice is the Bible.

I believe that if everybody actually read the Bible and spent some time thinking about it, they would quickly come to the conclusion that it is an illogical, contradictory and often violent piece of religious propaganda. Its few well-meaning ideas are so subsumed by politics and inconsistencies as to be almost incidental (and anyway, they are mostly snippets of self-evident philosophy that can be deduced by rational thinking – ‘Love thy neighbour’ and ‘ Thou shalt not kill’ for example.)

The Bible also represents a fascinating historical document of how irrational thinking comes aground on the reef of facts. Its dodging and weaving to preserve God’s Word in the face of terrible dilemmas is perhaps the best guide anyone can have to how pseudoscience works.

I could say a lot about this – maybe I’ll make it a Cow post!
